Full Of Wonder Is Wonderful

Don’t you love a good mystery? I think the suspense is so exciting – I love the feeling of trying to unearth the subtle clues, of testing out one possibility and then another, of having the sense of an adventure in a mental maze of my own creation based on the intrigue of the story. That’s what it is like to be aware of my spiritual journey.

So, the other day, I was unexpectedly aware of the overuse of the word, “wonderful.” I use it quite frequently: your cooking is wonderful, we had a wonderful time on our trip, your hair looks wonderful, and on and on. Then I realized that looking at the parts of the word gave it more meaning, as it really means “full of wonder.”

Let’s look at this delicious word, “wonder.” A wonder is a mystery! We also use the word to express an uncertainty, as in “I wonder what is around the corner?” It can also mean a miracle, a phenomenon, a marvel, a curiosity. So no wonder we use the word often in so many ways. I experience language, especially word choice, as evidence – whether we are aware of it or not – of our connection with the presence of the Divine.

I hope you wonder every time you use or hear the word if it is a whisper from the Divine mystery making itself known to you in a wonderful way.
