What Does God Look Like?

I cannot shake that image from the Sistine Chapel in Rome -- of God reaching out to touch Mankind. It is a fresco painting formally known as The Creation of Adam by Italian artist Michelangelo created in about 1508-1512.

That image has repeated its visual message over many centuries: God is male, white, old, healthy, human-like.

What happens to our assumptions if we question the typical image of this painting? Gender? Race? Age? Health/physical condition? Human form? Isn't it interesting that those are the big categories of discrimination and conflict (basically separatism) that we struggle with here on Earth?

We know these categories of separatism are not in keeping with a holistic, loving world. Perhaps these are the great divides we are meant to overcome on our human and spiritual journeys. What would God look like then if there were no divides, no separatism in the form of the Divine?  I wonder. Do you wonder?

These are the questions we ponder in our class exploring the about-to-be-published book PRESENCE. If you would like to join us, consider putting your information on the waiting list which is starting to fill. When we have a full class ready to start, you will get an invitation.
